What an event data recorder holds
An event data recorder is a function inside the airbag control module of most modern vehicles. When the module decides a crash is happening, it freezes a short window of data on either side of that moment: vehicle speed, brake and throttle, engine speed, steering input where fitted, seat belt status, airbag deployment timing, and the change in velocity through the impact.
The record is small, measured in seconds, and it only exists if the module saw an event. Getting it out intact, and reading it correctly, is the lab's core work.
